It is hard to believe that we are HALF WAY through our grade 2 year. Time sure has flown. This has been an exciting week in grade 2. We welcomed our friend Abaddon back to our class after a brief absence. We were so excited to see him! We also had the opportunity to do some YOGA…as welll as a little Zumba this week during Directed Learning. We all enjoyed getting in touch with our zen side. Namaste. Finally, today we participated in the Hour of Code. The students were wild about the chance to experience their first crack at computer coding. I have attached a link with more info and a few pictures of our day.

In Literacy we are beginning to study Non Fiction. We are having fun exploring a whole new library of books and learning all about the specific texts feature and how to read this type of text. We will also be doing some exciting nonfiction writing in the near future. That being said, if you have any nonfiction books about animals at your house we would love to borrow them for the next month or so.
The students have published their second books and are now on display in the class library to be shared with an audience. They are proud and so excited. Next up in writing will be friendly letters. We are currently reading Flat Stanley, a book about a little boy who turns flat and goes on some epic adventures. We are going to create our own Flat Stanley’s and send them out on some adventures of their own. Monday, I will send home an envelope and some instructions. All you need to do is decide who Flat Stanley will be sent to and fill out the address on the envelope with proper postage. Return this to me at the school ASAP and I will do the rest.
In Math, we are working on addition facts with sums up to 20 and have been learning all sorts of new strategies. Please encourage them to show them off at home. I have attached a great game to practice partners to 20.

As we settle back in to the New Year, we continue to work with the Zones of Regulation and encourage students to stay in THE GREEN ZONE FOR LEARNING. We have been working on strategies to help us when we find ourselves in one of the other zones (see poster). Each day I indicate what zone your child was in for the majority of the day to help you get a sense of their state of mind during the school day. This is not a behaviour tracking system and it is not intended to be punitive. My intention is to let you know so you have some information about their day and can have some rich conversations about learning. Please let me know if you have questions.
Stay tuned to the main page for upcoming events.
